St. Francis of Sales (1567-1622) of Italy, who served as the Bishop of Geneva, used to observe an interesting custom of the villagers of the district where he lived. He had noticed the same custom several times and oneday when he saw a girl servant of a farm came to draw water from a nearby well and following the same custom when she lifted the overflowing bucket of water from the well, she put an wooden Cross in the water of the bucket and took it out. The saint quickly went to her and asked, "Why do you do this?" The girl looked surprised and seeming as if she didn't expect such a question, she answered, "Why? This will keep the water from spilling anymore and the water will remain calm, still and steady till we take it home." The Bishop then wrote this piece of experience to his friend saying, "So when your heart is distressed and agitated, put the Cross into it's centre to keep it calm and steady."
Lesson: The Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ can quench fire, calm any storm, cooldown any agitation and cure any problem to establish peace.
