George Bernard (1873-1958) the Evangelist was travelling throughout the Midwest for preaching the gospel among the youth. Once having been continuously interrogated by several youth in a revival meeting at Michigan, Bernard was troubled by their disregard of the gospel. So he turned to the Bible to reflect more on the great sacrifice of Christ on the Cross. He got a vision and he wrote, "In the vision, I saw the Christ and the Cross inseparable." He then wrote one verse of a hymn on theme of Cross for which he received the melody immediately. After sometime he wrote the remaining three verses while he was at Michigan. When he first sang the entire song infront of a sponsoring Pastor and his wife, they were heavily moved with tears. So, on their request, he had to sing it in the revival meeting with his guitar along with an organ, a violin and a five voice choir. That hymn on the Cross brought tears to all and it spread like a fire from that revival meeting and it is one of the best hymns on the Cross till today which is On a hill far away stood an old rugged Cross, the emblem of suffering and shame. And I love that old Cross where the dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain. So I'll cherish the old rugged Cross, till my trophies at last I lay down...
Lesson: The Cross of Christ that we carry till the end of our life will some day get exchanged for a Crown.
