Ecotheology • Christian Theology

Ecotheology is the study of theology that explores the relationship between Christian beliefs and the environment. It is one of the branches in the Liberation Theology. Ecotheology redefines the relationship between faith and the environment, positioning nature not as a resource to be exploited, but as a sacred gift to be protected.

The Sacred Integrity of Creation
1. Theocentrism: Nature belongs to God. Its value is rooted in His ownership and creation, not in its usefulness to humans.
2. Intrinsic Value: Based on Genesis, creation is inherently "good." It possesses dignity and worth independent of human consumption.
3. Cosmic Christ: Christ’s redemption extends beyond humanity to the entire universe, aiming to restore all ecosystems and life forms.
4. Sacramental Nature: The physical world is a visible sign of God’s presence; therefore, damaging the environment is an act of disrespect toward the Creator.
5. Panentheism: The belief that God dwells within all things and all things exist within God, while He remains distinct from the universe

Responsible Stewardship
1. Caretaker, Not Tyrant: Reinterprets "dominion" as stewardship. Humans are called to be "gardeners" who sustain the Earth rather than masters who deplete it.
2. The Priest of Creation: Humans serves as a bridge between the Creator and the rest of the material world.
3. The Prophetic Role: The role is to "voice" the praise of nature and to offer the Earth back to God through responsible use and preservation.

3. Eco-Justice: Faith in Action
1. Ecological Sin: Recognizes that destroying biodiversity and polluting the Earth is a direct offense against God.
2. Social Connection: Environmental health is inseparable from social justice. Since the poor suffer most from climate change, caring for the Earth is a fundamental way to "love thy neighbor."
3. Eschatological Hope: Conservation is an act of faith, reflecting the belief that God intends to restore and renew the physical world rather than abandon it.

Memory Verse: Psalm 24:1
"The earth is the Lord’s and all that is in it, the world, and those who live in it."
