What is Eschatology? Christian Theology

Eschatology is the study of the last things or the final events and the ultimate destiny of humanity. The term comes from the Greek words eschatos (last) and logos (study). The teaching that Christ could return at any moment (Imminence), encouraging constant spiritual readiness.

Two Perspectives
1. Inaugurated Eschatology: The idea that the Kingdom of God began with Jesus' first coming and is already present, though not yet fully realized.
2. Consummated Eschatology: The focus on the future completion of God's plan when all things are made new.

Individual Eschatology
This concerns what happens to a person at the end of their physical life.
1. Physical Death: The separation of the soul from the body.
2. The Intermediate State: The conscious state between death and the final resurrection and being at home with the Lord.
3. Particular Judgment: The belief that a person faces an immediate reckoning or determination of their eternal destiny upon death.

Corporate or General Eschatology
This addresses the final events of the human race and the created order.
1. The Second Coming (Parousia): The belief in the literal, future return of Jesus Christ to Earth.
2. The Resurrection of the Dead: The teaching that all who have died will be raised to life for final judgment.
3. The Last Judgment: A final event where God judges all people according to their faith and deeds.

Important Signs of the Time
1. Global Evangelism: The requirement that the Gospel reach all nations.
2. Tribulation: A time of intense hardship and suffering for believers.
3. The Antichrist: The rise of a deceptive figure or power opposing Christ.
4. Global Upheaval: Increased occurrences of wars, famines, and natural disasters.

The Millennial Views
Theologians often differ on the interpretation of the thousand-year reign mentioned in Revelation 20.
1. Premillennialism: Christ returns before a literal 1,000-year reign.
2. Postmillennialism: Christ returns after a period of Christian peace.
3. Amillennialism: The 1,000 years are a symbolic description of the current age.

The Final State
1. New Heavens and a New Earth: The restoration of creation, where God dwells with His people in a state of eternal peace and righteousness.
2. Eternal Punishment or Reward: The final separation of the righteous and the unrighteous.

Memory Verse: 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first; then we who are alive, who are left, will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord forever.
