Once when a severe famine broke out and brought great crisis and misery in Russia, a beggar who became very weak and was almost starving to death, began to ask for alms to survive. At that time Tolstoy was going by that road and the beggar asked him some help. Tolstoy searched his pocket for some coins but he didn't find anything worth to give him except for a useless copper piece. Tolstoy felt very shy and he took the beggar's hand in his hand and said to him with humility, "Don't be angry with me, my dear brother, actually I have nothing with me now to give you." At these words of Tolstoy, the beggar felt very deeply illumined and charged inside and told him in a feeble voice, "Sir, you called me 'my dear brother' and I feel within me that I have become very rich now, this was a precious gift for me."
