What is Pneumatology • Theology Leaners

Pneumatology is the Study of the Holy Spirit. The term is derived from two Greek words: pneuma (spirit) and logos (study or word).

The Nature of the Holy Spirit
 1. Personhood: The Spirit is described as possessing personal attributes, including intellect, emotions, and a will.
 2. Deity: He is co-equal and co-eternal with the Father and the Son. In the Old Testament, the Spirit (Ruach Elohim) is seen in creation.
 3. The Filioque Controversy: A major historical divide concerns whether the Spirit proceeds from the Father alone or from both the Father and the Son. Our position is that He proceeds from both the Father and the Son.

The Roles of the Holy Spirit
 1. Revelation and Inspiration: The Spirit is credited with supervising the
authors of the Bible to ensure divine accuracy.
 2. Regeneration: The process of spiritual awakening or "new birth" in a believer.
 3. Sanctification: The ongoing work of the Spirit to refine a person’s character and holiness.
 4. Parakletos: The Greek term Parakletos translates to Advocate, Counselor, Comforter, or Helper. He exists to provide strength, legal advocacy, and guidance.

The Symbols of the Spirit
 1. Dove: Represents purity, peace, and divine presence.
 2. Fire: Represents purification, judgment, and zeal.
