Therefore:
430 years = From God's covenant with Abraham → Giving of the Law.
400 years = From the beginning of the affliction of Abraham's descendants → Exodus.
This explains the 30-year difference:
First 30 years: From the covenant with Abraham until the start of the 400-year period.
Next 400 years: From the beginning of the affliction until the Exodus.
Many scholars identify the beginning of the 400 years with Isaac's birth (when Abraham's true "offspring" began) or with Isaac's persecution by Ishmael (Genesis 21:8–9), because Genesis 15:13 says "your descendants" (not Abraham himself) will be afflicted. Isaac was born 25 years after Abraham's call, and the covenant of Genesis 15 likely occurred about 5 years before Isaac's birth, giving a difference of about 30 years.
So the chronology is often presented as:
